Bathroom decor: Modern Euro

Contemporary materials fashioned in a traditional way with some well-appointed vintage pieces read sleek yet layered, calm yet romantic.

Custom-made vanity
The custom-made vanity elegantly mixes modern flair and vintage charm with its chrome base and Carrara marble top. A mirrored chest fits perfectly in between.

Beautiful bathroom essentials
The extra-long vanity allows plenty of counter space for pretty toiletries like French soaps.

Get the look on a limited budget
To achieve this look, stick to a soft white palette, emphasize one or two focal points in the room and keep everything else bright, airy and open. Ingrid recommends investing in fixtures and natural finishes like marble and getting creative to cut costs elsewhere. In this bathroom, she repurposed two chrome bases and placed a single piece of Carrara marble on top to create a dramatic his-and-hers vanity for a fraction of the cost of custom millwork.

Get the look: Handsome living room

We’re captivated by the unique mix of lustrous metallics and organic textures in this Toronto living room.

1. Why we love it
With masculine appeal and classic sensibility, this refined living room is fit for any stylish bachelor. The space has an industrial edge thanks to a raw mix of metals and a minimalist design, but it still feels homey and comfortable because of its warm, friendly colour scheme and rich natural textures.

Why it works

Thanks to the neutral palette, the layering of different materials in the room doesn’t feel too busy or haphazard. The space features metallic finishes, which risk feeling cold, but set against the cowhide rug, textured grasscloth walls and carvedwood sidechair they feel inviting and luxurious.

MODERN RUSTIC KITCHEN

This modern rustic kitchen feels warm and inviting because of its vintage details and unique touches.

Super-bright and fresh space
Large ravine-view windows flood the kitchen with light, resulting in a super-bright and fresh space. The long, narrow island has an extended open section at one end to allow for seating. The flamed marble on the backsplash – created by scorching its surface – was carried onto the front of the island.

Drinks in one spot
A coffee station and wine fridge on the far wall of the kitchen keep drinks conveniently in one spot. Textured glass-front cabinet doors offer a break from all the white.

Minimal and modern
A big gas range wasn’t allowed in the condo, so an induction cooktop and barely there range hood keep things minimal and modern while still functional for the serious cook in the residence. The cabinet fronts on the inside of the island were done in grey for an unexpected touch.

Double wall ovens save space and maximize the cooking capacity for entertaining a crowd.

Key elements

  • Recessed-panel cabinetry
  • Pewter pulls
  • Grey Pulpis marble backsplash
  • White Cambria kitchen countertops
  • Wideplank engineered wood floors
  • Vintage schoolhouse pendant lights

In order to fit in as much storage as possible for the downsizing couple, the drawers were designed with built-in dividers.

Top tips
1
Think about where your family often hangs out or plays and try to position the majority of your workspace facing in that direction – it will make you feel like you’re part of everything, even when you’re preparing a meal or cleaning up after one!

2 Keep cabinetry simple and have fun with your countertop or backsplash selection. Cabinetry is not something you want to get bored of and replace quickly.

3 Allow counter space on either side of your range and sink and include a garbage/compost/recycling station near the sink.

4 Splurge to have a soap dispenser integrated into your countertop – it keeps the area around the sink clear of clutter.

5 Use hardware to add personality to your kitchen style.

Bathroom decor: Boutique hotel-inspired master bathroom

A simple palette of whites and greys, curvy shapes juxtaposed with straight lines and luxe finishing touches result in a lusciously decadent retreat.

1. Floating vanityTo keep the foating vanity from looking flat and clinical, recessed panel drawers were chosen.
2. Curved bathtubGlass-panelled doors lead out to a balcony and offer stunning views of Vancouver from the beautifully curved bathtub.

3. Get the look on a limited budgetFocus on creating a light, open space with minimal finishings. People get excited when they’re renovating bathrooms and want to use all these crazy finishes, which they think will create a really extravagant, beautiful space, but it’s actually the opposite. Keep your finishes to two or three and maintain a cohesive colour palette. And, while the expanse of marble tile is the big statement here, you could also use a porcelain or ceramic tile to achieve the pared-back look.

Adding colour to your home

For homeowners and designers alike, it’s always helpful to start with a source of inspiration or a jumping-off point when creating a fabulous interior. In this case, it was the colours in a renowned textile that inspired the fresh look of this West Vancouver home.

 Main living space
Schumacher’s Chiang Mai Dragon fabric – designer Karla Amadatsu’s colour inspiration for this West Vancouver new build. Brought in to add her traditional-with-a-twist style to the main living spaces, Karla was able to bring quite a few “you complete me” moments to the mix. Have a look for yourself.

Clean lines, weathered finishes, classic detailing and warm metals.
The dining room
Designer Karla Amadatsu paired a sleek, rustic oak table with classic Louis XVI-style chairs in a vibrant cobalt blue fabric to create a sophisticated look that’s not too formal in the dining room. An aged brass and crystal chandelier adds warmth and interest to the space. Rich blue linen fabric shines against the soft weathered frames of these chairs.

The living area is a study in balance. Curvaceous armchairs offset a clean-lined sofa and airy side tables lighten up a substantial coffee table. The added blue banding on the white drapes ties them in with the scheme.

Mosaic-tiled fireplace
A convex mirror is a traditional touch hung on the modern marble mosaic-tiledfireplace. “I thought it was important to have something on the floor-to-ceiling fireplace to break it up and add some contrast,” says Karla. Providing inspiration for the palette, the Schumacher fabric was used on the toss cushions. The striped wool rug adds a beachy vibe to the living area.

Making a big impact
Smaller accessories like these pieces of agate stone create big impact.

Kitchen staples and decorative touches in blue suit the grey and white tones perfectly.
Classic and contemporary kitchen
The mix of crisp white Shaker-style cabinetry, sleek grey quartz kitchen countertops, marble-tiledbacksplash and chef-worthy stainless steel appliances gives the kitchen a look that’s both classic and contemporary.

Kitchen island
The kitchen island serves as a spot for food prep but also acts as a breakfast bar. “So there’s a lot of seating for kids or entertaining,” says Karla. The iconic polished aluminum stools are an eye-catching focal point and work with the other shiny and matte metal finishes in the space.
